School Wide Related

Q1: Do you have any ethical program?

       Elementary School provides a Character Education Program for all Elementary students. The Elementary School Character Education Program meets once a week to promote Character Education. Teachers prepare many different types of activities to engage students in learning and practicing positive character traits such as honesty, responsibility and empathy.

       Character Education is a normal part of the curriculum at the Middle and High School levels. All teachers teach, model, and reinforce positive character traits to all students. Teachers use the TYAS Teachers Handbook and the Parent and Student Handbook to help guide and reinforce student behavior. Teachers and School Level Directors meet with students individually to help reinforce ethical behavior.

Q2: When was your school established?

      It was established on 2012.

Q3: What kind of accreditation does your school have?

      TYAS is currently approved by the Taiwan Ministry of Education.

Q4: Is your school an IB school?

      No. We are an American School and we currently follow the California State Standards, Common Core curriculum and teach a variety of Advanced Placement Courses.

      The Advanced Placement (AP) program gives high school students an opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. AP courses allow students to emphasize subjects which they are good at. Students can raise their GPA and when they apply for college, they will be able to demonstrate their academic advantage.

Q5: Where is your Library?  Do you have budget for library books?

      The library is located on the 5th floor. We have a book drive every year and we always accept donated books.

Q6: Q1: How many classes in one grade?

      Depends on the number of students, now we only have 1 class for each grade. If the number surpasses the limit, we will separate students moderately. There is one class for each grade 1 through 12 except grade 3 which has 2 classes.

Student Affairs related

Q7: Is participation in Clubs mandatory?

      Yes, it is mandatory. Club time is from 3:20-4:00 Monday through Thursday.

Q8: If my kids doesn’t want club, can I get my money refund?

      No. Club is mandatory.

Q9: What are the Club options for my child?

      We conduct a survey with parents and students to see their interests and then we will provide options for our students to choose according to their needs and interests.

Q10: How many field trip students will have per a semester?

      The average is about 2 field trips per semester.

Curriculum Related

Q11: What curriculum does you school follow?

      Taoyuan American School offers an American-based curriculum aligned with the common core content standards established by the California state board of education for students in grades 1 through 12 with foreign passports.

Q12: What kind of standardized assessment does you school have?

      IOWA Testing. We offer IOWA testing for Grades 3-8. High school students will focus on the PSAT, TOEFL, ACT and SAT tests through our College Preparation Program. The IOWA test is given at the end of April each year.

Q13: What AP courses do you provide?

      We perform student AP interest surveys each year to help determine what AP courses to offer our students. This year, TYAS offers 5 AP courses to include - AP Calculus AB, AP World History, AP Computer. AP Chinese, AP Studio Art. We will offer different courses next year.

Q15: What are your teachers from?

      Our teachers are from the United States, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, Philippines, St. Vincent and Taiwan.

Q16: What are their qualifications?

      All of our teachers have at least a Bachelor’s Degree. 60% have a Master’s Degree and 10% have PHD.

Q17: How much is the total tuition per year?

      Grades 1-5 NT$224,950 per semester

      Grades 6-12 NT$249,480 per semester

Q22: What’s included in the tuition?

      Tuition includes Accident Insurance and Yearbook.

Q23: What if my child doesn’t join the lunch plan, what other option does he/she have?

      Students may bring their own lunch to school and we have a refrigerator and microwave oven to assist students with their lunch needs.

Q24: Do you provide school bus?

      Yes.

Q25: Where is the pick up location?

      Pick up locations are established along the bus routes.

Q26: Do I need to pay for field trips?

      Yes. Students will pay for each field trip.

Q27: Do I need to pay for textbook?

      Yes. Students will purchase all of their textbooks.

Q28: Is the tuition refundable?

      If a student transfers or withdraws one week before the semester starts, 70% of all fees will be refunded except for the registration fee. If a student transfers or withdraws within four weeks after the new semester starts, 50% of the following fees will be refunded -- tuition, transportation, club , lunch and EAL. If a student transfers or withdraws in the fifth week or later, there will be NO REFUND.

Q29: What if my child enrolls in the middle of semester, what about the tuition?

      Tuition fee, Lunch will charged per diem.

Facility related

Q30: Where do outdoor activities take place?

      There is a small grassy area outside of the main building and students do PE activities at the basketball courts.

Q31: Will college students come to the building?

      No, we have our own entrance, separate from the university and our security guard monitors our school entrance.

Q32: Where can I park when I’m coming to pick up my kid?

      There is a parking lot located before the entrance to the school where parents can park. We have a system for dropping off and picking up students at the beginning and the end of the school day.

Q7: Can my child take medication during school hours?

If your child needs medication while at school, please be sure to see and speak with the school nurse regarding any medications. If your child needs to take medication prescribed by a doctor you need to follow KAS procedures: 1) your child needs a prescription signed by a physician, 2) properly labeled medication containers are required before medication can be brought to school (including over-the-counter medication), 3) If a child carries an inhaler for asthma, the school must be notified in writing by the parent accompanied by the doctor’s note. Our procedures are intended to support the safety and well being of all students requiring any kind of medication while attending school.
